:) what an awesome mom. Good parents, grandparents too, instill and inspire. It sounds like she has left a wonderful legacy of memories for you.

By the by... the best way to become fluent is to live there. My brother and I have taken years and years of french and he became fluent by living in Provence with his wife for a year. Poor wife: she knew none, but by the end of it was fluent as well.

As for learning languages more quickly by living in the country and being "forced" to speak them - absolutely! "Total immersion" is definitely the best way to learn any language. I used to be an instructor with Berlitz (also taught other instructors the "Berlitz Method"); basically, the most effective way to learn is like a child - see things and name things, and don't have another language to fall back on as a crutch (during lessons, not a word of the native language should be spoken, if possible). Very simple, but it works well.
